Intuit
Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art presents the exhibition Genesis:
Gifts and Promised Gifts to the Permanent Collection in both galleries from
September 10 through December 31, 2004 at Intuit, 756 N. Milwaukee Avenue in
Chicago. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday; admission
is free. It opens with a reception on Friday, September 10 from 5 - 8 p.m.
In 2002, Intuit embarked on its next stage of development with the decision
to establish a permanent collection. Led by the collections and acquisitions
committee, Intuit Exhibition Committee Chair Jan Petry curated an inaugural
exhibition featuring promised gifts received from friends and supporters
from Chicago, across the nation, and overseas-artists, private collectors,
dealers, and supporters. Today, the organization has received gifts of
works by William Hawkins, William Dawson, David Philpot, Minnie Evans,
Lee Godie, Howard Finster, Johann Hauser, Dwight Mackintosh, Justin McCarthy,
Oswald Tschirtner, P.M. Wentworth, Miles Carpenter, Willie White, Wesley
Willis, and Joseph Yoakum. Intuit member Jessica Moss also curated a
special installation from Intuit's Henry Darger archive, featuring the
fireplace mantle decorated with religious materials from the artist's
collection.
